Understanding the Difference Between SSDI and SSI
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) offers financial assistance to people who have been working most of their life, but, because of a medical condition, have been unable to work for at least 12 months.
Conversely, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a need-based program, and financial assistance is not based on how much you have worked. Many people who qualify for SSI have been unable to work their entire lives because of a physical or mental disability.
